The highlight for this week should be the meeting with a
friend whom i have not met for 7 years. It was amazing how God works at times !
Shwu Eng was a Singaporean whom I met in 2007 when one of my
students was “grounded” in Kathmandu due to altitude sickness. We had a good
chat though we were just acquaintances. We did not meet each other since then, so
my memory with her blurred.
When I met her again in Bhutan, it did not appear to me that
we knew each other until we continued our conversation further. Through the
conversation, I suddenly remembered every detail we shared in 2007. When I told
her my dialect name, I was amazed to see that she had recorded my full name in her
Sept 2010 note in her phone.
To add to the “twist”, I realized she knew Dr Wang as well.
She stayed at Dr Wang’s place in the 1980s when she was in Calcutta. And all 3
of us met at the same place, same time.
It was sheer coincidence that Dr Wang and Lori was invited to my place
on Sunday for lunch.
This whole event amazed me because Shwu Eng was only here
for 5 days, and everything was so timely. I happened to go marketing on Sat,
called Anne to have tea with me, got a call from Shwu Eng who came back from
Punakha, met up with her and Matthew on Saturday evening. When I went to the
church with her and Anne on Sunday, I realized she knew Dr Wang.
We had a great time catching up and connecting with each
other, the lunch turned up to be fine because God sent 2 angels to help me in
the cooking !!
Other events that happened in the week :
1.
Farewell dinner for the Thai teachers at a very
traditional Bhutanese restaurant. The food was made from authentic Bhutanese
cookware and it uses traditional kiln. That made the whole lot of difference to
the taste of the food.
2.
Teacher’s day event was meticulously planned by
the students and it was really very elaborate. They presented the traditional
masked dance to welcome the teachers and
the lunch was sponsored by one of the top chef in Bhutan. His son happens to
study in the school.
3.
Dr Wang invited the whole class of the best
artifact to his place for dinner. There was bonfire, games and good food for
the kids. It was a proud moment for their form teacher, Ms Sonam Tsomo and it
was indeed a very memorable time for all of us. That evening, I realized Vika, the orphan whom
Dr Wang and Mr Tshering were talking about was also the same Vika whom I met a
month ago and offered to help him in his study habit. He work during the day
and study in the evening. He is repeating his class 12 for the 3rd
time. Sigh.. It’s not going to help him if he is balancing his work and studies
at the same time.
We had a lot of feasting during these 2 months for different
reasons and I was glad I was part of all the events. My fever subsided but my
cough got worse.
But things can only get better each day. I count my blessing
each day as I listen to the BBC news. There were daily reports of man-made or
natural disasters happening at different parts of the world. What more can we
ask from God when we have a roof over our heads, basic needs met and our loved
ones with us.
